How to Use a Pizza Stone


Pizza is one of those meals that both adults and kids love. Probably it's so popular thanks to variety of topping which gives everyone a chance to chose those ones that are the best, or because of the thin dough with crust. If you go to a nice place to eat pizza, you'll see that pizza is usually made in stone ovens. That's because baking pizza in oven wouldn't make it crusty and authentic. Don't be devastated if you can't afford to buy yourself a special stone oven (well, who can?), you can make perfect pizza at home in the oven but with the help of pizza stone.


Pizza stones are made from shamot stone, they are not exclusively for pizza, you can use these stones for regular baking, just make the recipes are appropriate for cooking on stone. The main principle of these stones is that is collects heat rather fast and it releases it slowly.

You'll need:

regular oven;

pizza stone;

flour for powdering the surface of pizza stone;

parchment paper (instead of flour)


  • Place a pizza stone on the grill on the lowest level of your oven.
  • Turn on the oven and set the heat at 390 degrees Fahrenheit (200degrees Celsius) and leave the stone there for 1 hour.
  • Within this time, turn off the oven and place your pizza right on the stone. Don't worry about this process as pizza stones are usually sold with special shovel. Place parchment paper or sprinkle flour all over the surface of the pizza stone if you wish to simplify the process of its cleaning.
  • Keep pizza on the pizza stone in the oven for 10 to 20 minutes (depending on the amount of topping that you used).


Don't preheat the oven

Always place pizza stone into cold oven and hit it only when the stone is inside.

Don't use cleaning solutions

Use clear water to clean the stone, if you don't want it to get too dirty, use parchment paper to cover it. Never wash the stone in dishwasher. Use a wet cloth to wash it.

Don't cut anything on pizza stone

You will damage the stone and it's not the cheapest kitchen utensil at all.
