How to Remove Wallpaper
A fresh coat of paint or new wallpaper can change your room beyond recognition and give it a fresh look without wasting a lot of money. However, before you start you need to get rid of a layer of old wallpaper. Apparently, thatís the most challenging part of renovations. Sometimes, old wallpaper is extremely hard to scrape off the walls and you literally hate the whole idea after hours of exhausting scraping. Protect the floor
Before you start, you want to protect your floor and baseboards from water and debris. You can use pre-taped plastic drop cloth to do it. Besides, make sure you removed any furniture off the walls.
Prepare the walls
You can use a razor scraper or some special perforating tool on your old wallpaper to make it easy to remove. Doing so, you also donít damage the wall and save yourself a lot of headache and patching job. The tool tears the wallpaper without tearing the wall and makes it easier for wallpaper removing solvent and water to break down the adhesive.
Prepare the wallpaper removing solution
If you have a special solvent, follow the manufacturerís instructions printed on the bottle. If you donít have this solvent, make a mixture of ĺ hot water and ľ fabric softener, 25/75 solution of water and laundry softener, or 50/50 mix of water and white vinegar.
Remove the wallpaper
Pour the solution into a sprayer or use a roller to apply it to the wallpaper. Let it soak for 5 minutes and scrape the wallpaper off using your scraper. Add more solvent when needed and keep scraping off the wallpaper as you go.
When the job is done and all wallpaper is removed, use a sponge and hot water to remove any remaining paper and adhesive. Clean the mess and you are done.
- Donít make any solvents without prior testing your old wallpaper. Sometimes, when wallpaper wasnít hung carefully enough or in case low quality adhesive was used, wallpaper come off easily without any solvent.
- Donít scrape too hard. You donít want to damage the wall, especially if itís a drywall.
