How to Meditate Properly

Meditation isn't some kind of "magic" and it's purpose isn't opening "the mind's eye". The purpose of meditations is health, peace and happiness. Every person has done something like meditation at some point - when you couldn't sleep, you started counting to concentrate on something besides your worries and sooth your mind. This isn't exactly meditation, but they are remotely related.

Understand value of meditation

If you are wondering what exactly meditation can give you:

  • help you fight anxiety and panic attacks;
  • help you get out of depression;
  • help you learn to organize your thoughts;
  • help you get rid of bad habits (you won't need them anymore);
  • help you deal with frustration and anger.

Make half an hour a day

To mediate you have to make 30 - 40 minutes a day: 15 - 20 minutes in the morning and 15 - 20 minutes in the evening. In the morning meditation will help you gather energy for the day, in the evening it will help you unwind after a long hard day at work so you can have a good night sleep. You have to make 30 - 40 minutes every day. Half an hour a day isn't a big payment for happiness is it?

Pick a spot

No need to say: it has to be someplace quiet, not too warm and not too cold. Dim lights and incense sticks will help you relax.

Make yourself comfortable

Every muscle of your body has to be relaxed. Empty your mind. It may take some time and practice - we are used to thinking all the time and making thoughts go away may be pretty hard. Even if you can't stop your inner monologue, it doesn't mean you are wasting your time, it is still working, but it will work better once you learn to stop the flow of thought.

Pick a technique

There are different meditation techniques, and you have to pick one for yourself:

  • imagine fire or any other image / situation / world (Utopia if you will) that soothes you;
  • read mantra (say special prayer in Sanskrit), it will help you escape your worries.
  • concentrate on your breath.

Don'ts

No pain, no frustration

There should be no pain, frustration or "i have to" in meditation, it has to awake only positive emotions.

No weariness

Make sure you are not too tired and your stomach isn't too full - you don't want to fall asleep when meditating.

No high expectations

Don't expect meditation to work right away. You may even feel worse at first, and that shouldn't scare you.

No doubts, no hesitation

Don't believe if someone says that there are different kinds of meditation for love, money and etc. You have to choose a kind of meditation you are comfortable with - meditation itself will help you improve all spheres of your life.
