How to Make Bows

Introduction

A bow is what can make an outfit much prettier and complete your image. A bow may go on a gift box which can make it much more festive. In this tutorial we will tell you how to make a fabric bow for your hair or clothes and how to make a ribbon bow to attach to a gift. Making bows is pretty easy, it doesn’t matter if you can sew, you will only have to make a few stitches, which means you can do it without a sewing machine. Read our instructions to find out more.

Do's

1

Fabric bow

What you will need

  • a piece of fabric;
  • thread;
  • needle;
  • scissors;
  • a ribbon;
  • measuring tape.

Guidelines

Bow size

Figure out what size bow you need and cut out a rectangular piece that is twice as big, except you have to allow extra 1/5 an inch from each side (for the seams).

Sewing

Fold that piece of fabric in two (wrong side up!) and sew all the sides together.

Inside out

Make a small hole in the middle of your future bow. Make sure it is small enough so the ribbon can hide it. Get your fingers in the hole and turn it inside out so the seams are not visible.

Final step

Shape the bow and wrap ribbon around its center to fixate and hide the hole. Press a knife or scissors to the wrong side of a ribbon end and slide it toward its end so it curls up on its own. Do the same with the other end.

Ribbon bow

What you will need

  • Ribbon;
  • Glue;
  • Double-sided scotch tape;
  • Stapler;
  • Scissors.

Guidelines

Bow size

Figure out what size bow you need and cut out a piece of ribbon that is twice as big, allow extra ¼ an inch to glue or staple its ends together.

Gluing

Glue the ribbon ends together, avoid leaving marks where they may be visible and don’t fold the ribbon – it has to be shaped as an “O”.

Stapler

Press the area you have just glued to the back of this “O” to get an “8”-shaped model and pierce this place with a stapler.

The last step

Wrap another piece of ribbon around the stapled place to hide it. Fixate it with a double-sided scotch tape. Press a knife or scissors to the wrong side of a ribbon end and slide it down so it curls up on its own. Do the same with the other end.

Don'ts

Don’t forget

Don’t forget to prepare everything you need for making a bow: you don’t want to run around your apartment with glue on your hands trying to find a stapler.

Don’t be upset

Don’t get upset if you do something wrong, just get some extra pieces of ribbon and fabric so you can start over

Conclusion

When creating something beautiful with your own hands, you shouldn’t be afraid to experiment and have fun with it. You can listen to the music while you do it, or talk to a friend of yours. Making bows and decorations is always interesting, it is a great hobby.
