How to Make Apple Butter


Apple butter is a sort of apple jam that is very thick in its texture and concentration. What concerns the general rules of preparation, it's made by slow cooking apples on low heat. You can easily find apple butter in any other store, but we suggest making apple butter at home. You will have total control over the quality of ingredients and be absolutely sure there are no preservatives or chemicals involved. In addition to that, if you've harvested too much of apples in your fruit garden, making apple butter can help you not to through all these excessive apples away.



Classic Apple Butter Recipe


2 pounds (900 grams) of washed, peeled apples;

½ lemon;

1 pound (450 grams) of sugar;

2 teaspoons of gelatine


  • Cut apples into quarters, remove seeds, fruit stems and make sure there's only fruit flesh left.
  • Grate apples or shred them on kitchen combine. Cut the half of the lemon and add it to apples.
  • Add sugar and gelatine to apples. Mix everything thoroughly.
  • Place apples into a pan and put it on low heat. Cook it like that for at least 2 hours (usually preparation takes up to 3 hours). Within this time, classic apple butter is ready. Stir apple butter constantly, every 3-5 minutes for sure.

Apple butter with cinnamon recipe

Per each kilo of peeled apples you'll need:

700 grams of sugar;

0,7 cups of water;

½ teaspoon of cinnamon;

½ teaspoon of lemon juice


  • Cut apples into quarters, remove seeds, fruit stems and make sure there's only fruit flesh left.
  • Place apples inside of the pan, add water, bring the water to boiling point and boil for 20 minutes more.
  • Mash apples (using a colander or a blender). Add sugar and cinnamon, mix everything. Cook on slow heat for up to an hour. Stir each 3-5 minutes.
  • Remove from the heat, add lemon juice, mix everything once again. Apple butter with cinnamon is ready.


Don't neglect stirring!

Don't forget to stir apple butter all the way while it's being sow cooked. If you don't do that, apple butter will get burnt all over the inner surface of the pan you are cooking it in.



Homemade apple butter is a very easy recipe to cook. You only need to remember about stirring it, that's the whole trick. You can make apple butter and not only eat it yourself but also give away to your friends as small gifts.
