How to Get a Po Box
Having your own Post Office Box is convenient for a number of reasons: it helps you keep your home address private Ė you donít have to give it away unless you want to. It is an easy way to separate your personal and business letters and bills. Besides, you are going to be the only one who has access to your letters (unless you put someone else on the list in your application). Getting your PO Box can take time, but it is worth it. Choose a box
Figure out what box size you need. The larger it is, the larger your monthly fee will be. There are five PO Box sizes:
- 3 inches by 5.5 inches;
- 5 inches by 5.5 inches;
- 11 inches by 5.5 inches;
- 11 inches by 11 inches;
- 22.5 inches by 12 inches.

Fill out the application at usps.com/poboxes to apply online or go to the post office and fill out application there. If you donít want to waste your time filling out the application in a crowded post office, print it out, complete and bring it to the office. You will need to provide them with two forms of your ID. At least one of your IDs has to include your picture and at least one of them should provide your current address. It can be your ID, a driverís license, corporate identification card, passport, lease or mortgage document.
You can pay online using your debit or credit card, or you can pay at the Post Office with cash, debit or credit card, or even a check. The best decision would be to choose Ďautomatic renewal paymentsí (be ready to pay 3 months ahead).
Donít postpone payments
Pay your fee on time! If you donít, you wonít be able to access your mail. And if you are 10 days late, you will never get your mail, and your box address will be taken by someone else. These are harsh terms, but you donít have to go to PO to pay for your PO Box, you can do it online.
Not acceptable IDs
Donít use social security cards, credit cards, birth certificates as forms of IDs. They are not accepted by Post Offices.
PO Box is very convenient, especially if you have your own business. Choose your PO Box size and more importantly Ė its address; and apply for it.
