How to Find X Intercept

Introduction

Finding X intercept is just as easy as finding Y intercept. If you are new to this, here we will explain you how exactly to do that. This is only about simple math and understanding of things. Basically, all you need to remember is the certain algorithm of actions and practice a little bit to remember what goes first and what goes last. Of course, you can make a cheat sheet but it is always better to keep stuff in your mind.

Do's

1

Basics

X intercept is where a line crosses X axis, while Y intercept is where it crosses Y axis. Where a line crosses X axis, there Y equals zero, as that dot lies on the X axis. This is why to find X intercept you have to substitute 0 for Y and solve the equation by finding X.

2

Example 1

If your equation is y = 4x + 7, to find X you need to substitute 0 for Y and solve it.

Y = 4x + 8;

0 = 4x + 8;

8 = 4x;

X = -8/4;

X = -2.

X intercept is -2 which means the line crosses X axis there where X = -2 and Y = 0 and coordinates of that dot are (-2; 0).

3

Example 2

If your equation is 4x 3y 12 = 0, substitute 0 for Y and solve it:

4x 3y 12 = 0;

4x 3x0 12 = 0;

4x 0 12 = 0;

4x 12 = 0;

4x = 12;

X = 12/4;

X = 3.

X intercept is 3 which means the line crosses X axis there where X = 3 and Y = 0 and coordinates of that dot are (3; 0).

4

Example 3

There are more complicated equations than those given above, for instance, if you are given the equation x3 - 3x2 - 18x = y, you will have to spend a little more time solving it. A few Xs in an equation show that this is a curve that crosses X axis more than once. Here is an example and we hope it helps you solve complicated equations in the future:

x3 - 3x2 - 18x = y;

x3 - 3x2 - 18x = 0;

x (x2 - 3x 18) = 0;

x (x 6) (x + 3) = 0;

x = 0; -3; 6.

This means that the given curve crosses X axis in spots (0; 0), (-3; 0) and (6; 0).

Don'ts

  • Don't forget to check your work before handing it over.
  • Don't confuse anything: to find X intercept, substitute O for Y; to find Y intercept, substitute 0 for X.

Conclusion

Finding Y and X intercepts is one of the easiest math tasks if you now how to solve equations. If you don't, you should probably read more about it and practice a little bit before you try to find X and Y intercepts. Math is the basis of more complicated studies as physics and computer science, so this knowledge is very important for any single person who wants to have decent education in future.
