How to Cook Clams
Clams may seem to be an exotic dish that is hard to cook, but this is not true. There is a plenty of ways to cook clams and you can read more about it below. Cooking clams doesn't take much time. When a clam is cooked, its shell opens and you can see the delicious meat inside. You can use one of the following approaches to cook clams: steaming; grilling; baking.
Steaming is the most common way to cook clams. It is also believed to be the best one.
- 70 clams
- A cup of white wine
- Two cups of water
- A saucepan or a pot
- Garlic and bread
First of all - you need to buy clams. Pick clams that aren't broken or damaged. Keep them in a freezer until you start cooking. To cook clams you need to soak them in water for about 20 minutes beforehand. This is a great way to get rid of all the salt and sand. In 20 minutes pick them out of water (make sure there is no sand or dirt left).
Take a large saucepan or pot and fill it with 2 cups of water (it should be 1 inch deep). You can also add a cup of white wine (shellfish goes great with white wine). Bring water to a boil and add about 70 clams. You can also add garlic and butter. Place the lid on the saucepan and leave the clams for about 10 minutes to get them open. It can take up to 20 minutes.
Some clams may still be closed - in this case you will need to break them open. Serve clams with garlic butter (or just butter). They are going to be very oily, and you may need lots of napkins. You can use bread to soak up the juice.
Grilling is the easiest and the fastest way to cook clams.
- Garlic butter & bread (or whatever it is you are going to serve with clams)
- Wine (if you like)
Preheat the grill beforehand (on medium low). Place the clams on grill grate and make sure they don’t overlap. Wait for clams to open. It may take 2 – 7 minutes. Serve the clams with garlic butter, bread and white wine. Let them chill before serving.
- Baking sheets / baking form
- Bread crumbs / salad dressing mix
- Whatever it is you are willing to serve your clams with
Crumb the clams. Open them and place some crumbs inside. Place them in the preheated oven and bake for 10 – 12 minutes.
- Don't extract clams from their shells.
- Don't take the clams with your bare hands while their shells are still hot.
Clams are to be served as appetizers or in a salad or any other dish. If you just enjoy eating clams you can have them with a glass of white wine or garlic bread / butter. Not only are clams delicious, they are great for health.
