The very first thing we do when we come home - is turn on the computer. This is why communicating via Internet is so easy and convenient. But it can also be impersonal. You chat with people, but you don't hear their voices. Or you do, but voice is almost always distorted. Besides, when the person you want to reach is offline, you have no other choice but to use a phone.

Get a calling card

Calling abroad is not as expensive as one may think, you can call from your cell, or use a calling card (there is a very wide choice of them). Calling abroad using a cell phone is much more expensive than buying a calling card. Either way, you need to know all the codes: exit code, country code, area code, and a city code or a personal phone number.

Dial exit code and country code

If you are calling China from the US, the first number you should enter - is 011. It is the exit code, code that you dial when you call from the US to any other country. Then goes the country code - the code of the country you are calling. For China it's 86.

Calling to someone's cell phone

If you are calling to someone's personal cell phone, then you need to dial the exit code 011, the country code 86, then - 1 and one of the following numbers 3, 4, 5, 8 followed by a personal number.

Don'ts

  • Don't call abroad from your cell if you are not sure how much they will charge you.
  • If you buy a phone card, don't forget to read all the instructions before you call, write out all the codes so it is easier for you to dial and follow the instructions that machine gives you. If you are using a calling card it is better to call from a payphone.

When you call someone, you should always remember about the time difference, for instance, if it's 6 p.m. in New York (- 5 GMT) - it's 9 a.m. in China (+ 8 GMT). Keep in touch with your friends, family members and beloved. They will always be happy to hear your voice.
